Poromat 2248 is an expandable, porous epoxy laminate used as a spacer, interlayer or filling material in VPI (Vacuum Pressure Impregnation) systems. The laminate consists of an electrical grade fibreglass mat which is mixed with a small amount of epoxy resin and pressed to form a rigid sheet. The sheet surfaces are then covered with a thin layer of polyester film to minimise direct skin exposure to the glass fibres and to enhance the strength of the sheet.
When exposed to impregnating resins or temperatures above 60°C the laminate swells to about 150% of its initial thickness, filling up all available free space. The properties of the final laminate are then dependent on the impregnating resin that is used and the amount of swelling.
Blue / Grey in colour, Poromat 2248 was developed especially to be used with impregnating resins containing accelerator or catalyst. This high-quality insulation material is often used as a bedding material under slot wedges due to its ability to swell and take up the space.
