Superwool® insulating blankets are soft, flexible high temperature insulation solutions. These quality blankets contain unique, low bio-persistent high temperature insulation fibres and have become the product of choice to replace traditional refractory ceramic fibre (RCF) insulation. With more and more studies confirming the potentially carcinogenic effects of exposure to ceramic fibre particles, the need arose for a material that offered the same level of performance without containing the hazardous fibres found in RCF products.
Superwool® manages to maintain key physical properties of RCF blankets including their low shrinkage and good mechanical strength whilst at the same time providing lower thermal conductivity. It has a classification temperature of 1200ºC allowing it to be used in the same applications as RCF fibres, including:
- Kiln linings and expansion joints
- Ceramic and glass casting and molding
- Furnace lining and coke oven repairs
- Chimney, boiler and water heater insulation
- Many more applications requiring heat containment
Superwool® is manufactured from Alkaline Earth Silicate (AES) fibres such as Calcium Silicate. These fibres have been studied and found to be low bio-persistent, meaning they break down in the lungs unlike the fibres found in RCF products. Superwool’s unique construction, that contains up to 30% more fibres than RCF and competitor products makes Superwool® a superior choice, without the health and safety hassles that accompany traditional ceramic fibre products.
