Spiral Wound Gaskets Style WRI

Style WRI Spiral Wound Gaskets (SWG) are identical to style WR, with the addition of a solid steel inner ring. The inner ring provides radial support for the gasket on the ID to help prevent buckling or imploding whilst also serving as an additional (along with the outer ring) compression limiter to prevent the spiral wound component from being overly crushed.

Each component in a WRI style spiral (Outer Ring, Inner Ring, Winding and Filler) can be produced from a range of different materials; allowing you to choose the best option for your application. Depending on the materials selected, WRI spirals can be produced to seal virtually any corrosive medium, very high pressures and to withstand exposure to temperatures ranging from cryogenic environments to 1093ºC.

WRI Style Spirals can also be produced in a range of different thicknesses (usual thickness is 4.5mm thick windings with 3mm thick guide rings) and different densities. AG offers our WRI Style SWGs in a range of different material combinations to suit the needs to a vast array of applications. Of these, the most popular is a gasket with a Carbon Steel outer ring, Flexible Graphite filler and 316L Stainless Steel windings and inner ring (though a 316L outer ring is also a popular choice). In typical applications, the inner ring is made from the same material as the windings.

AG usually supplies WRI Style SWGs to suit ASME B16.5 and ASME B16.47 flanges though we can produce these high quality gaskets to suit other standards and custom flanges if required. Standard WRI spiral wound gaskets are double colour coded (a process consistent with ASME B16.20) to for easy identification of the winding metal and filler while the gasket is on the shelf or installed between flanges. The metal is designated by a solid colour on the entire outside edge of the centring ring. Filler materials are identified by a number of stripes placed at intervals around the outside edges of the centring ring.
